Mr. Rogers' AP/IB Physics

Specifications for AP/IB Physics Investigations Record Book

All physics investigations will be maintained in a bound composition notebook such as the ones show. Color is unimportant, but the size and type of book must match with those shown in the picture. Spiral bound books, loose sheets, or books not meeting the specifications below will not be graded.

Pages are to be written using the following standards:

Investigation books will contain the  following:

Title: Make this Descriptive

Purpose: Given by Mr. Rogers

Hypothesis: A prediction with a basis. Both must be stated. State any mathematical models to be tested and state the assumptions (systematic errors) in them.

Variables: List the independent, dependent, and control variable (variables you attempt to keep constant.

Equipment: This is to be a labeled drawing showing the relationship of the equipment. It is not a list.

Procedure: Use bullet statements. The procedure should be written for so that a knowledgeble person could repeat your experiment.

Analysis/Data: Include all raw data and graphs. Computer printouts may be pasted in the book.

Discussion Conclusions: Will contain the following:

  • Summary of results: Keep very brief. NEVER introduce new data in a conclusion
  • Answer to the implied question in the purpose (at least one good paragraph).
  • Random experimental errors: discuss and estimate the effects on the results. NEVER list anything under your control such as errors in calculations. If these exit, correct them.
  • Suggestions for improvements: This can include improvements in the mathematical model tested. Be specific.

Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics is one of the most humorous, entertaining, and readable physics books available, yet is filled with all kinds of useful content and clear explanations for high school, 1st semester college physics students, and film buffs.

It explains all 3 of Newton's laws, the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics, momentum, energy, gravity, circular motion and a host of other topics all through the lens of Hollywood movies using Star Trek and numerous other films.

If you want to learn how to think physics and have a lot of fun in the process, this is the book for you!
